On The Limits Of Politics And Possibilities Of Resistance

The fourth edition of the Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art will open on the 25th of August, and run through to the 25th of November 2007. As the only international biennial in Sweden it is a unique art event seen from a national point of view. The Art Directors for this year´s biennial are the curators Edi Muka and Joa Ljungberg, both residents of Stockholm, Sweden and Tirana, Albania. The title of the biennial is RETHINKING DISSENT with the Swedish under title “Om politikens begränsningar och motståndets möjligheter”, which in English would be:” On the limits of politics and possibilities of resistance”.The curatorial approach is inspired by critical thinking, commenting on the recess of the “political” in favour of the global market expansion. What inherent problems and new possibilities does this process present and how do contemporary art answer? The curators want to create an event encouraging reflection on the limits of democracy in a global era, while also discussing to what extent art can keep an edge in the socio-political discourse, without undermining its artistic qualities and become a moralizing agent.Twenty-eight artists from different countries will participate in the exhibition, which will take place in four main venues: Röda Sten, the Röhsska Museum, Göteborgs Konsthall and an old Post Office. A number of art projects will also take place out doors.Röda Sten Culture Association is the main organising party of the 4th edition of the Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art, a decision that was taken by Gothenburg’s culture committee in May 2006.Aiming at creating an interaction with the local art scene, Edi Muka and Joa Ljungberg have invited local artists, galleries and other art organisations to stage their own productions in dialogue with the biennial, using the theoretical platform of the biennial as a starting point. These events will be linked to the biennial program and presented as satellites.Apart from art exhibitions, the biennial will offer the visitors a substantial pedagogical program that includes different guided tours, lectures and courses.
