Pour Portrait of Duration, Melik Ohanian s’attarde à l’observation et à la représentation de la mesure du temps, et plus particulièrement à son étalon de référence, la seconde. En sept photographies montées dans des panneaux lumineux et animés une seconde par minute, il révèle le changement d’état du Césium 133 - élément chimique qui définit la seconde universelle dans les horloges atomiques - par son passage de l’état solide à l’état liquide. Avec ce portrait de la durée, et par l’observation en une seconde du comportement de la matière qui la définit, Melik Ohanian invite le spectateur à l’expérience d’une représentation de la durée même. L'oeuvre a été présentée au Grand Palais lors de la FIAC pour le Prix Marcel Duchamp 2015.
Portrait of Duration — Cesium Serie
For the Marcel Duchamp Prize 2015, Melik Ohanian ponders over the observation and representation of the measurement of time and, more particularly, over his benchmark yardstick, the second. In seven photographs mounted into luminous panels and animated one second per minute, he reveals the passage from solid state to liquid state of Caesium 133 - a chemical element defining the second in atomic clocks. With this portrait of duration, and by observing in one second the behaviour of the material defining it, Melik Ohanian invites the viewer to experience a representation of the duration itself.
